Do you look for things to make you happy? Or maybe you seek happiness to abate sadness.
When we rely on things to make us happy – people, places, events, material goods, food, alcohol, drugs – we associate happiness with feelings of elation, which are temporary.
To have true lasting happiness, we must find contentment. In the Sufi teachings, contentment is a high station. It is learning to be content with what life brings – the highs, the lows, the mundane, and everything in between.
Seeking more and more and more in an attempt to find happiness has driven our world into a cycle of consumption and waste that depletes the earth’s resources, clutters our homes, and makes us less healthy and less happy.

Choosing contentment does not mean that you do not seek change. Peace Pilgrim was a huge advocate for change. It doesn’t mean that you give up and tolerate what causes pain or disharmony.
It means that you take guidance and wisdom from your life events and find meaning that leads you to basic truths. Basic truths are what will sustain us and our planet. They lead us to simplify our lives so we can live more peacefully and harmoniously.
