Have you ever tried to show up for an event to impress someone? You go with every intention to put your best foot forward. Then out of nowhere, that less than best foot jumps to the forefront and says, “Hey there! I’m here too. Remember me?”
It’s like, if you’ve ever been in a public restroom and seen someone beautifully dressed in a stunning outfit with the perfect shoes, and they’re about to walk out of the bathroom with a part of that stylish shirt caught in the waist of their pants and a piece of toilet paper trailing behind…

It’s as if that shadow part of yourself is saying, “You can’t move forward and leave me behind in the shadows. If you want to walk, I’m coming right along with you.”
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I’d prefer to hop on the best foot and hide the other one, but it’s hard to hop around gracefully for very long. If you don’t allow that other foot to balance you, you’ll end up grabbing for a crutch or a chair or the wall – something to stabilize yourself, at least until you heal.
I don’t mean disrespect to anyone who has a legitimate injury. This would be showing up real. But if you have a flaw that you’re trying to suppress, and you only allow part of yourself to show up, eventually it becomes obvious that you are not fully present and you’re using a crutch to get around.
This doesn’t mean you have to walk into every situation waving your flaws around on a flag so everyone will see them. The only person who needs to acknowledge them and be okay with them is you.
What is important is for you to say, “Yes, I have these parts of myself – the parts I love and the parts that challenge me – and it’s okay.”
I have the competent confident woman who wants to save the world, and I have the terrified child who wants to stay home and eat chocolate. I have the energetic athletic go-getter who wants to work out every morning, and I have the part who wants to crawl back under the covers and take a nap. I have a part of me who deeply loves God and wants to be in prayer and meditation all day, and another part who feels isolated by that and just wants to be “normal.”
All of these are okay. They balance each other, and they keep me real.
So how can we show up fully without denying these opposite parts of ourselves, and still show up with confidence and competence?
