Self-Honesty
Beyond the descriptions, analyses, and reasons, what do you feel? What does it mean to you? What does self-honesty tell you about who you really are?
I watched the movie, The Whale, last night. A dear friend who has lived with obesity recommended it, saying it gave her great insights into her struggles with food. I have also struggled a great deal with food, so I welcome the insights.
The main character is a reclusive English teacher who teaches online courses. He encourages honesty from his students – not just the typical descriptions and analyses, but he wants them to write what they really feel, their raw honest thoughts and feelings beyond political correctness or an attempt to conform to educational standards that might typically get them a good grade.
He begs of them, “Tell me something honest.”

We are our own most intimate partners, and the quality of our relationship with self is the one that determines our true happiness and fulfillment. Share on X
How often are we asked, “How are you?” and we instantly reply, “Fine.” without a thought. Is it because we do not have time for the truth, or because we are just giving answers we think the other personal wants to hear? Or are we just going through the motions of a dialog that was scripted and taught to us before we were born?
I honestly believe it’s okay to give rote answers at times. You get to choose when and with whom you share your honest feelings and opinions.
What is most important is that we take time to be honest with ourselves. Self-honesty. Because even though we don’t want to show all of ourselves to everyone, we are our own most intimate partners, and the quality of our relationship with self is the one that determines our true happiness and fulfillment.
My spiritual teacher used to say, “Don’t stop with the outside pictures. Go behind and behind and behind and behind… until you reach the truth.” What is the truth within you?
In this week’s Meditation & Healing Circle, we make the time for self-honesty. We hold ourselves in loving acceptance and travel behind and behind and behind… until we realize a truth that is rooted in love and beauty.
