Healing the Effects of Inconsistent Parenting

One of the most effective things we can do to increase self-confidence is to release the mixed programming from inconsistent parenting.

As children, we come into the world as blank slates. Yes, we have an inner knowing and compass, our own personalities and constitutions, we have inherited some programming from ancestral experiences, and we carry our own patterns developed before this birth.

And all that said, for the most part we are dependent on our parents, siblings, teachers, and caretakers in this lifetime to teach us what behaviors give us love, acceptance, connection, and safety we seek.

In an ideal world, we would receive consistent responses and guidance based solely on actions. For instance, when a stove is hot and we touch it, we get burned. Pretty simple. We can safely base actions on the knowledge that if we do not want to get burned, we will avoid touching the hot stove, and we can feel confident about the actions we take.

But we do not live in a ideal world as such. We are all emotional beings, and parenting and care-taking can tax emotions on even the best days. As a parent, what we love and adore one day might cause us to erupt the next day.

For the child, this can produce uncertainty, low self-confidence, low self-esteem. You know that feeling of. “I just can’t do anything right!” It may be a matter of trying to succeed at something or trying to get approval from those you are in relationship with.

The inconsistent messaging can leave you feeling fearful, hesitant, uncertain, self-loathing, unwilling to learn new things or make new friends or go for what you want in life.
