Healing Shame: Preserving That Which Is Sacred Within You
This past week, I witnessed an extremely painful childhood experience – one of those moments that separates a child from his own light. We all have these experiences in childhood. It’s part of the human heroine’s journey, and healing the scars of shame is a part of the return to unity with the Sacred Self.
Listen to the podcast here:
The situation I witnessed this week was of a child whose household is struggling with lice. The situation is beyond his control. He is dependent on his parents to cleanse the home and his body and to manage the situation. It is no fault of his own.
Meanwhile, he was told by an adult, “No, you cannot come into this home. You cannot play with the other children. You have lice. You have to go home.”
Crushed, he got into the back seat of the car, covered his face with his hands, turned and buried his face into the corner of the seat and wept from the depths of his heart and soul.
This is the outward expression of the visceral experience of shame. The energy of shame acts the same way inside the body, and it stays there as an internal protective mechanism, often wreaking havoc on the internal organs, until it is healed.
When there is a disrespect or violation of that which is an element of the Sacred Self, the developing identity or the physical body, it brings about a visceral experience of shame. The energy of shame is one that twists and turns in on itself to hide itself in order to protect itself from being seen and further shamed. It is an innate sense and autonomic reaction. The shame will stay with him as a protective measure until his scars are healed.

As painful as it is, every child encounters shaming experiences. It’s one of the hidden gifts of this life journey. It separates us from ourselves so we can learn what we need to learn and later return to complete ourselves.
But it can be healed, and you do not have to wait for any certain age or length of time. If you know a child who experiences shame, by all means extend loving support as soon as you are able.
What is needed for healing? In today’s Prayer & Healing Circle, we’re going to offer healing for the hiding energies of shame that linger in the body – for yourself and/or others.
