Forgiving Your Past
As much as we’d like to pretend that old stuff never happened, intentionally forgiving your past is one of the most healing things you can do to set yourself free and live the life you are meant to live! The guilt, shame, and humiliation of past mistakes can linger in your subconscious for decades, stifling your voice and keeping you from expressing your gifts and talents.
A friend once said to me, “A leopard doesn’t change his spots.” He was making the point that people do not change who they are.
It may be true that we are who we are and that does not change. However, it is also true that we do not always know who we are and are therefore not always living true to ourselves – and this can make us look like spotted leopards when we are not.

When I was in my teenage and young adult years, I overindulged in drugs and alcohol quite a bit – to extremes. I did things I’m not proud of, and I know some of my actions hurt people, including myself.
Is this because I’m an irresponsible or mean or bad person? Not at all. I was lost. I tried desperately to fit in to a world where I didn’t belong, and the influences of my environment told me this was the way to do it.
The past left me with a lot of pain and regret and shame. Five years ago when I came back to my hometown to care for my dad, my past came rushing back. I felt like the old mask was pasted over my face and people would see me as that irresponsible troublemaker.
But that was never the real me. That was the lost me. The person who was lost was a good person. She just had not found a way to be true to her authentic self and feel safe and loved. She has found that way now and can therefore be true to herself.

When we are learning the ways of the world and trying to figure out where we fit, we do a lot of things that are not aligned with who we are inside. We bump up against the edges and get a lot of spots. But we can find ourselves and heal. This too is part of the journey.
I’ve seen many who once looked like leopards lose their spots altogether. It takes embarking on the intentional journey to discover who you truly are and align your thoughts, beliefs, habits, and inner conviction to your truth. AND it takes forgiving the mistakes of your past.
