Female Empowerment: Reclaiming Sexual Dignity
Today’s topic comes in response to learning that the song “WAP” was named 2020 Song of the Year by several media outlets and reading reviews calling it a “sex-positive expression of feminine power.” Today we’re going to explore what Female Empowerment is in terms of sexual expression.
In case you’re not familiar with the song, it’s is a sexually-explicit hip hop song performed by 2 top female artists that proudly pushes the envelope. When I was a young teen in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I was aware that song lyrics shaped what was expected of the girls and boys in my small town. I didn’t like it, but as someone who wanted to fit in, I conformed. And I ended up carrying a lot of regret and shame into my adulthood.
My main concern now is for the audience this music reaches, what it does to the minds of our youth and how it shapes the culture they are living in. What do they believe they have to do to fit in and be accepted? Bottom line, I don’t want them to feel the pain I felt when I was in that age range.

The other day, I reached out to the head of the Theatre Department at our local college, Mr. H. Russ Brown. As someone who works with our young adults and the arts, and who is really good at connecting with them and what’s moving in their world, I thought he might have some insights that could help me process what I was experiencing.
When we are not in survival mode, what does reclaiming sexual power look like? What is female empowerment and the role of sexuality? Share on X
Mr. H. helped me see that this was a response to all the male hip hop artists who had made music and videos where they were like kings with women bumping and grinding all over them. This was a way for the women to take back that power – to take it over to the female control.
I understand this. Having worked with many survivors of sexual trauma, taking pre-emptive action to control a situation creates safety. It looks like high-risk sexual behavior, but in this situation, it’s reclaiming sexual power out of a need for survival.
But is this reclaiming power or reclaiming dominance? One of our common misperceptions about power is that power equals dominance. This is one of the reasons we fear power and dislike authority. But true power is NOT dominance.
