Don’t let your passions die on the vine…

If you feel an inner inspiration, don’t let your passion die on the vine. To give life to your soul, you have to take the risk to blossom.

It was 1999 – the year I left my corporate job, sold my home and car, gave away my possessions, and went to study with a spiritual teacher, a Sufi guide from Jerusalem. The pull in my heart was so strong I couldn’t not go. To say no to my heart would have been more painful than the comforts and security of staying home. Does that mean it was easy? Not always. Worth it? YES! Then 6 years ago, I moved back to my childhood home to care for my father after his wife passed. He was 94 and I couldn’t bear the thought of him living alone. Again my heart was pulled so intensely that I couldn’t not go. Being back “home” has given me a glimpse of what life might have been if I had stayed the course I had set for myself doing what I had thought was expected of me:

1. 1. Get a college degree (check)
  2. Get a corporate job (check)
  3. Get married (check)
  4. Buy a house (check)
  5. Have a family (didn’t make it this far)
  6. Work until it’s time to retire (now I live a purpose, not a job)
  7. Live happily ever after (still happening!)

I made it through step 4, then divine intervention altered my course. I often question, “Could I have remained in the same job, relationship, home, and still followed the inner calling?”For a long time, I thought that if I had a family when the Divine inspiration hit me, I would not have been able to follow the call. It might not have played out exactly the same way and it would have had different challenges. Since I’ve been back home, I’ve plugged into the family life and the pulse of inner inspiration remains strong. I see a problem and I want to solve it. I gain insight and I want to share it. I’m constantly inspired to seek, learn, write, create, teach, serve. I’m learning how to merge family and passion. That too is a beautiful expression. I see that it doesn’t have to be an either/or – my passion can include family, participating in some elements of their life while following inspired passions and living a lifestyle that is different from the people I live with. What is needed is to get clear on what is essential to the heart/soul passion and purpose, and what is important for relationships, financial security, and other needs. You do not have to follow anyone else’s model. You can let go of what it’s supposed to look like and create your own. But you can’t say no to divine inspiration forever.
