Wow! So I’ve had several opportunities for personal healing in the process of conducting interviews for this online summit.
Today, while I was interviewing Devon Bandison, I found myself deeply touched by the story of what sparked his passion to focus his career on Fatherhood and Leadership.
It touched into a well of pain in my own heart that stemmed from seeing a few of my nephews grow up without fathers, a promise I made to my mother a week before she passed (almost 27 years ago), and a whole bunch of secrets kept inside for the sake of honoring the ones I have loved.
I realize today that this life is short. We really never know when we’ll be called to leave the physical body. It’s time to share with my nephews some of the hopes my mother had for them.
I had resisted because she didn’t want them to see her as sick. She cared deeply for them and wanted them to remember her as being there for them and loving them, and while I’ve carried that love and caring forward, I never actually spoke to them of how much she cared.
Why? I’m not sure, but I realize I had been holding so tightly to keeping the promises that I wasn’t letting anything out. I hadn’t faced how to share the “good” without disclosing the “not so good” that she didn’t want them to know about. So I’ve loved from a deep inside place, not outwardly expressing
What my mother wanted to hide came from her own self-judgment and shame. She wasn’t a bad person, not by any stretch. She was human. It’s important for children to understand that their parents are human, and in my own mother’s case, her humanity did not diminish the love she felt for any of us – not my nieces and nephews, not my father, not my siblings, and not me.
This is an important message for all of us. It’s important for the “adult” children to model for the younger children how to be self-accepting and loving through the “imperfections” of being human. In this vain, I can share the stories more freely – they do not paint a horrid story of a defective person. They depict love amidst the challenges of human life.
I hope you’ll join me for this interview series. I also interviewed Michele Eisenberg yesterday on Emotional Leadership – 3 Keys to Productive Anger That Let You Live Happy, Lead Powerfully and Enjoy Thriving Relationships Built to Last. I’m sure this one also contributed to the gifts of healing, as each interview has played a role.
I know there are jewels in this series awaiting you, too. Please take advantage of this opportunity. There is no charge for this series.
The interviews will be released starting Wednesday, April 22. Meanwhile, you can join us in the facebook group to meet the speakers, watch a few previews and discuss your favorite topics.
