Breaking through Barriers When You Want to Be Heard

When we speak and feel we’re not heard, it hurts. These are among our basic need of human beings – to be heard, understood, respected, validated. If you have a pattern of speaking and not being heard, you likely have a filter that says, “no matter how hard I try to speak my truth, I’m not going to be heard.” We each have our own filters through which we experience life and through which we relate to each other. Filters are based on what we’ve learned from past experiences. We use our filters to make sense of the future and to be prepared for what may come.

But just because someone is not hearing us, it doesn’t always mean they are mean or evil, or even that they are not trying. In fact, sometimes they can be well-intentioned. They just haven’t got it yet. The person you are speaking to may have a filter that says, “I know I’m right, but people never believe in me. People don’t see me.” Being seen is another basic human need.

Can you see how “I need to be heard” and “I need to be seen” might run into challenges in a relationship? Both want to be respected. Both want to be understood. Both want others to believe in them.

So how can you penetrate through the filters to have meaningful and productive communications?

That’s the topic of today’s Prayer & Healing Circle.
