Breaking Free from Gender-based Expectations

Gender-based expectations do not work because there is no such thing as 100 percent female or 100 percent male. All aspects of self fall somewhere along a continuum, and no two human beings are alike.

As a young mathematician, I was told over and over again that women were not good at math. Yet my test scores proved otherwise. In my high-tech career, my achievements were diminished and uncompensated as I was told repeatedly that “women do not make it here.” And yet I held my own and then some.

Where do our gender-based expectations come from? More importantly, are they accurate for you? At some level, we are all imprinted with societal expectations of gender and pressured to conform to the “norms.”

While some traits may be of feminine or masculine archetypes, our gifts and talents are not confined to gender. And regardless of physical body, there is no such thing as 100% female or 100% male.

We each have many aspects of ourselves, some of which lean toward a feminine archetype and some toward a masculine. No two humans are identical; we all land somewhere along a spectrum. The important thing is to find your unique blend and be YOU – regardless of what kind of body you live in or what anyone has told you is acceptable for you.

More than 50 percent of women in the US report feeling unsafe just by virtue of being in a female body. Food is an effective crutch to help us feel safe and secure.

So, does that mean we are doomed to live with fear, self-soothe with food, and wrestle with a body that portrays the struggle?

The traumas, stories we’ve bought into, and the beliefs that have permeated our consciousness are not the end of our story.

We are crossing a delicate bridge in our cosmic evolution. We are here to move into the next chapter of the human story told from the voice of the empowered feminine healer.
