Have you been hurt by religion? Or even by teachings of spirituality?
I’ve been in a workshop this weekend, and one of the questions asked was “What do you want to be the best in the world at?”
My first hit was, “I want to be the best at facilitating programs for spiritual transformation, healing and growth.”
—
When it came time to share my answer, the facilitator said, “Why don’t I believe you?”
This opened the door to what was lurking in the shadows, what was hiding in my blind spots that I could not see, or at least the places where I hadn’t been looking.
Having been on a spiritual path for over twenty years, having lived in spiritual community and studied with a spiritual teacher, I’ve developed many new close relationships. It’s kind of like a second chance at family life, choosing different siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, even parents, and trying to make a go at life again, but with different guiding principles.
The catch is, you’re still learning – and everyone else in this new family cluster is also still learning. And any new learning has a learning curve. And in learning curves, we all make mistakes.
We have to remember that we’re all human – we are humans seeking God, and our humanity would like to find a perfected flawless Divine Being on this new journey called “spiritual,” but we’re still human.
Often the expectation is set that religion, spirituality and all that comes with it, because it is in the name of God it will be perfected. This sets us up for disappointment even more than our initial family of origin did – because what conscious expectation did you have when you came into your family of origin? It might have sucked, but at least for a little while, you didn’t know any different.
Spiritual seeking through religion or any other form can bring disappointments and create new wounds. Hopefully, it has given you tools to heal the new wounds when you uncover them, but these wounds need to be healed as well.
When the facilitator asked that question, “Why don’t I believe you want to be the best at facilitating programs for spiritual transformation?” – this is what I uncovered. I had been hurt many times throughout my journey of transformation, and I don’t want to hurt people in the ways I’ve been hurt.
However, the beauty I’ve uncovered and the connection with the Light inside myself, the knowing of a Divine unconditional love that is so exquisite – the benefits far outweigh the pain. I would not choose to undo any of it.
And now I do have the tools to heal the wounds and live more fully into a love of spiritual transformation – a love of love itself.
Now, bringing this to light, I have the capacity to bring even more of my desire and passion into the work I feel I’m meant to do – and the gifts I feel I’m meant to share.
Have the wounds of religion or spiritual seeking held you back from knowing and owning the truth of who you are? Have they held you back from living the full capacity of your passion? Your purpose?
Please join me for today’s Prayer & Healing Circle to bring healing to the pains of religion and spiritual seeking. Please don’t let the mistakes of others you’ve encountered along your path keep you from the true Divine Light that is waiting inside of you to guide you to living more fully into your Divine expression.
