Just sending a quick note about National Food Day. It’s today, Saturday, October 24th.
National Food Day is a movement to inspire Americans to change diets and our food policies. There are a number of activities going on around the country that highlight the importance of healthy food choices and sustainable practices. If you’ve got some time today, go out and support the events in your community, and have some fun!
You can find out about events in your area through their website, http://www.foodday.org/events. If you can’t get to an event today, there are other ways you can get involved if you feel called to make a difference in this way.
I’m in Texas today celebrating my father’s 93rd birthday. I will miss the local events in my Florida community, but no doubt we will have a food-centered celebration at some point in this day.
My family loves food, and they don’t hold the same values I hold when it comes to food as medicine for the body and food choices as critical to caring for the earth.
I don’t try to change them by beating them over the head with shoulds or supposed-tos. I am here to love them and feel their love for me, and to enjoy the celebrations of life. However, I always make sure there is something on the table that I can feel good about eating, and the messages get conveyed in more subtle ways.
In fact, yesterday I went to the grocery store with my sister and my father, and they chose organic produce!! They smiled and said it was because I was there, but I think they got it because they wanted it. They are aware of the value. They recognize they have choices, and it’s not hard to make a healthier choice.
We are many bodies and one earth. The choices we make as individuals matter, and the way we communicate with others matters. Critical judgment divides. Love unifies.
Check out the activities going on today in your area. I hope you find a way to go out to support your local organizers and have some fun while you’re there. Click here to find events.
Note: The movement is sponsored by the Center for Sciences in the Public Interest along with an amazing advisory board that includes Michael Pollan, Alice Waters, Will Allen, Marion Nestle and a number of our state senators and representatives. This mixture gives me hope!
Have a beautiful weekend!
Live and Love Joyfully!
