I love celebrating Earth Day! My favorite Earth Day was several years ago when I was working a conference in Santa Rosa, California, and I slipped away for a couple of hours to attend a “meeting” in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park during a Bob Weir concert. (ssshhhh… don’t tell anyone! I hadn’t confessed that publicly before now.)
Hey! It’s important to celebrate our Mother! But just like with the traditional (human) Mother’s Day, why pick only 1 day to celebrate our Mother Earth?
Whether we recognize it or not, we celebrate the Earth every day when we eat the foods that sustain us.
We celebrate the earth when we breathe the air, drink the water and dance upon the ground to great music in fabulous parks!
We might curse her gravitational field when we step on the scale, but really – where would we be without it?
Just as our human mothers held us near, gave us shelter and sustenance, the Earth Mother shares in that role and provides for us all.
We can’t separate ourselves from the Earth, and if you’ve ever tried – or distanced yourself from natural surroundings for any reason for a prolonged period of time – you can bet your body noticed it. Admit it – you missed your Mother!
There is a Native American proverb that says, “The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth.”
Honoring the earth means honoring our own existence and nurturing our own sustenance. It means dancing with her, laughing with her and celebrating the life she makes possible for us all!
In fact, I think I’ll head out for a barefoot dance on my Mother Earth’s moonlit sands tonight – with love, respect and gratitude for all she gives!
I invite you to honor your Mother Earth with a love, respect and gratitude that makes your heart sing! After all, she does not belong to us – we belong to her.
Happy Earth Day to you and Your Mother!
Live & Love Joyfully!
In service and gratitude,
Debra Graugnard
