Working Hard to Prove Your Worth

When something comes up 3 times in the same week, I take that as a sign to address it with the group. The issue is feeling undervalued at work and working hard to prove your worth so much that you are near collapse, and you are still overlooked.

You are not getting support you need because you feel like asking for help would be admitting you are not capable, even though you are often doing the work of three people. Or if you are in your own business, you might be giving too much away and not getting the sales you need to sustain the business. So you work harder and give away more!

I thought of this as historically a women’s issue, because when I was in corporate, I was one of 3-6 women in a department of 80, and it was very much a good ol’ boys club where women were clearly not welcomed. However, one of the people I spoke with this week was a man.

When you have been classified as not fitting the mold, or maybe it’s the budget, no amount of effort is going to prove them wrong because there is no lack of proof, it’s a misperception of truth.

Well, here’s another truth. You are not defined by the rules of their club. Your value cannot be diminished by their non-acceptance. No one can take away your inner power and strength.

More than 50 percent of women in the US report feeling unsafe just by virtue of being in a female body. Food is an effective crutch to help us feel safe and secure.
