Do you see your shadow (Embracing Your Shadow)

Happy Groundhog Day! February 2nd is the day, according to an old Pennsylvania Dutch superstition, when the groundhog emerges from his den and if it’s a sunny day and he sees his shadow, he retreats back to his den and we get another six weeks of winter. But why does he retreat when he sees his shadow?
This is a question we could each ask ourselves. We all have shadows, and we’ve all experienced those times when the light shines on us and we see our shadows clearly.
It can be startling, embarrassing, uncomfortable. It can make us want to retreat to our dens for another six weeks like the groundhog.
Why is it so uncomfortable? That which creates the shadow is always there, even when the light is not shining on it. It still affects how we show up and how we relate to others and the world around us. It affects how we perceive ourselves, our self-judgment and our ability to love and accept ourselves.
In order to keep the shadow from being seen, we have to avoid the light – both the outer light and the inner light. And the light inside each of us wants to shine!
The poet Rumi said:
“Your task is not to seek for love,
but merely to seek and find all the barriers
that you have built against it.”
It’s the blocks and barriers that create the shadows. The blocks and barriers inhibit the flow of love and hide the inner light.
We create our blocks and barriers to protect the tender parts of ourselves that have experienced pain. Yet these parts need love, and they yearn to be seen and understood for what they truly are.
In order to keep the shadow from being seen, we have to avoid the light – both the outer light and the inner light. And the light inside each of us wants to shine! Share on X
